Mom writes: When my daughters were young, separations were sometimes difficult. I would always tell them, "A piece of my heart goes with you." Several years ago, when Gini was first learning to knit, I was moved to tears by her Mother's Day gift to me - a "Piece of My Heart Dishcloth." She'd like to share the pattern with you and we hope you will make these for someone you love! |

Yarn - Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton (or equivalent), ~235 yards.
Needles - Straight needles, US size 7 (4.5mm)
Other - Tapestry needle; 1" button (for hand towel)
Gauge: 16-1/2 sts and 22 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinet stMeasurements:
Dishcloth: 9-1/2" x 8"
Hand Towel: 14" x 11-1/2"
Instructions:
Dish Cloth: Cast on 39 sts. Knit 2 rows. Begin pattern:
Row 1: k1, p37, k1
Row 2: *k7, p1, repeat from * , end k7
Row 3: k1, *p5, k3, repeat from *, end p5, k1
Row 4: k5, *p5, k3, repeat from *, end p5, k5
Row 5: k1, p3, *k7, p1, repeat from *, end k7, p3, k1
Row 6: k4, *p3, k1, repeat from *, end p3, k4
Row 7: k1, p4, *k2, p1, k2, p3, repeat from *, end p1, k1
Row 8: k39
Repeat 8 rows of pattern 4 times more (total of 5 repeats). End by knitting one row. Bind off. Weave in ends.
Note: Repeat pattern a total of 6 times for a more nearly square dishcloth.
Hand Towel: Cast on 55 sts. Knit 2 rows. Work 2 repeats of pattern (above, as
for dishcloth). Knitting the first and last sts of wrong side rows, continue in
stockinet st for about 6", ending with a wrong side row.
Begin garter stitch (knit every row).
On the next two rows, k1, *k2tog, repeat from * to end. (14 sts remain)
Knit even for 4".
Shape buttonhole tab:
Row 1 - k5, k2tog [twice], k5
Row 2 - k12
Row 3 - k4, k2tog [twice], k4
Row 4 - k10
Row 5 - k3, bind off 4, k2
Row 6 - k3, yo, k3
Row 7 - k7
Row 8 - (k1, k2tog) twice, k1
Row 9 - k5
Row 10 - k2tog, k1, k2tog
Row 11 - k3
Bind off remaining stitches. Weave in ends. Sew button beneath buttonhole.
